Birth is a physically traumatic experience on the body for both the Mother and the baby. It seems like a no brainer to get Mom on a massage table as soon as possible, but its less obvious that little babies need body work too. The journey through the birth canal is a long one and uncomfortable. Each contraction squeezes the baby and forces them down into birthing position. Once the baby has been delivered, it’s first few moments of life are spent in completely new physical environment. They are not safely contained but suddenly exposed, stretched out and vulnerable. Tiny and fragile, their little bodies have gone through quite the ordeal! Massage is not only safe for babies but there are many benefits of infant massage. It can really make a difference during those first few weeks of life!

Benefits of Infant Massage

According to Mayo Clinic, Infant massage can relax and help soothe a crying baby and even help them sleep. It can reduce stress hormones and even encourage bonding. Some studies also suggest that infant massage involving moderate pressure might promote growth for premature babies. Infants in NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) who received massage showed 21% more weight gain and were discharged an average of 5 days earlier than those who did not receive massage.  Infant massage has been shown to improve motor development, especially in premature infants and those who have developmental problems. Increased responsiveness was also noted and for some babies it can help with colic and gas issues.

Infant massage should not be deep but should be gentle and slow. To properly perform infant massage, one must be have training and know how to read their body language. We recommend waiting at least 45 minutes after a feeding to perform the session, as to not upset the digestive cycle. If the child has a steady gaze and appears calm and content, he or she might enjoy a massage. If your baby turns his or her head away from you or becomes stiff in your arms, it might not be the best time for a massage.

Here at Maternal Massage, we realize that if baby is stressed, mom is often stressed. This is why we offer 15-30 minute Infant massage sessions. Each session is performed based upon the need of the child. Mom or dad is in the room and occasionally holding the baby throughout.
